GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEW: Lummi Blackhawks

Coach: Randy Kaui

Last year: Went 1-17 and 0-12 in the Northwest Conference. ... The lone win came against Squalicum’s junior varsity team. ... Randy Kaui took over the Blackhawks at the start of the season.

Players to watch: Isabella James (sr.), Dawn James (sr.), Treena Humphreys (jr.)

Outlook: It’s hard to imagine how far the Blackhawks have fallen in the past few seasons. After finishing fifth at the 1B state championships in the 2007-08 and and fourth in 2008-09, the Blackhawks have only had one winning season. The past two years, the program has collected three total wins. Lummi looks like it has plenty of players to start the year this season, although many of those are just in eighth grade. There are some talented upperclassmen, but the goal is to just learn how to play basketball again. The Blackhawks do return leading scorer Treena Humphreys (14.5 points per game), while Dawn James averaged 9.2 last season.
