Coach: Mark Wright
Last year: Finished 7-13 overall and 2-10 in the Northwest Conference. ... Started the year off 6-4 before losing nine of final10. ... Failed to make the postseason.
Players to watch: Bailey Molnar (sr., guard), Chalae Wolters (fr., post), Sarah Hulbert (jr., guard)
Outlook: The Storm have four returning seniors but are a fairly young team. Wolters heads the young guns as a freshman post. She had a team-high 10 points in the season opener. Wolters is part of a Squalicum’s cornucopia of bigs, who will have to play a large role for Squalicum this season. “We have to use our size,” Wright said in a phone interview. “We need our big kids to be strong enough to rebound the ball and get easy looks.” Squalicum also will try to get its bigs in transition to score. “We’re a team that has to play fast,” Wright said. “We have to defend really well. We’re not going to scare a ton of people offensively, so we’re trying some new tactics to get easier baskets.” Still, with so many new players, Squalicum is still finding its footing. Molnar averaged 2.8 points last year, while Hulbert averaged 4.9. “We’re just like everybody— kind of rambling around. We need to sniff out what we’re good at and what we need to work on.”
