GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEW: Sedro-Woolley Cubs

Coach: Rene Pedroza

Last year: Went 3-17 overall and 1-11 in the Northwest Conference. ... Failed to make the postseason after finishing in 13th in the Northwest Conference. ... Averaged only 36.6 points per game and allowed 53.5 points per.

Players to watch: Emily Van Liew (sr., guard); Samantha Cox (fr., guard), Mikayela Nutting (jr., forward)

Outlook: In the past eight seasons, the Cubs have only won 31 games. This season, they got younger and still lack size, so don’t expect the Cubs’ fortunes to change just yet. “We’re young and inexperienced … We’re working on fundamentals,” Pedroza told the Skagit Valley Herald. Pedroza is in his first year with the program after coaching at Everett Cascade. Sedro-Woolley did start off the season with a narrow 52-51 win over Sehome, though, and Cubs fans are hoping that’s a sign of things to come. Cox impressed in her first varsity game , putting up 10 points, while Nutting is a strong forward inside. She led the team with 11.8 points per game last year.
