Coach: Brenda Ellis
Last year: Went 11-12 and 6-6 in the Northwest Conference, finishing eighth in the league. ... Went 1-2 in the district tournament. ... Averaged 47.2 points per game, while allowing 49.3 points per.
Players to watch: Emily Yost (sr, post); Emily Brandland (jr., post)
Outlook: The Mountaineers felt they were robbed of a chance at making a run to the state tournament after losing star post player Yost to injury with two games left in the regular season last year. The good news for Baker is that Yost is back along with Brandland forming one of the better tandems in the NWC. Yost averaged 21.1 points per game last year, while Brandland scored 11.8. The Mountaineers will be looking to run the floor, despite having the talent to battle in the half-court game. “We have to be conditioned extremely well. We play up tempo,” Ellis said in a phone interview. Conditioning becomes even more important with only eight girls on roster. All five of Baker’s starters will be large contributors as Emmy Cline, Kylee Engholm (2.7 points per game last year) and Brittany Call (2.3) give the Mountaineers a surplus of talent.
