Coach: Mark Gilmore
Last year: Went 4-18 overall and 2-10 in the Northwest Conference. ... Lost both games of the district tournament, one of which was a narrow 42-41 defeat to Coupeville.
Players to watch: Janessa Murphy (sr., forward); Sydney Swanson (sr., forward); Ryley Zapien (so., guard).
Outlook: The Trojans are a young team with only two upperclassmen and whole bunch of young guns. So Meridian’s focus is on getting better everyday, Gilmore said in a phone interview. “We’re not real big. We’re real young, but we have great energy and a pretty good talent pool,” said Gilmore, who enters his second season. A lot of that energy is a carryover from the success of the Trojans’ girls’ soccer team. “They built a lot of confidence, so I hope it helps,” Gilmore said. Captaining the Trojans are seniors Murphy (6.6 points per game) and Swanson (4.1), who both have gotten better every year for Meridian. The Trojans also benefit from returning their leading scorer from last year, Zapien, who averaged 12.5 points per game.
