Coach: Mike Ivy
Last year: Lost in the regional round of the state tournament. ... Went 3-1 in the district playoffs, including back-to-back wins to qualify for state. ... Finished 19-6 and went 10-2 in the Northwest Conference, finishing second behind only 1A state champion Lynden Christian.
Players to watch: Abby Reid (sr., guard); Carly Bannerman (sr., forward); Shelby Slaughter (sr., guard).
Outlook: After a very successful 2013-14 season, the Golden Eagles enter this year with six seniors that have all experienced the pressure of being among the top teams in the Northwest Conference. Heading the charge is Honeycutt (16.3 points per game), Reid (2.8), Slaughter (0.8) and Bannerman (3.2). That foursome features some of the hardest-working players in the NWC, Ivy said, and with the smaller size of the Golden Eagles this year, they’re going to need it. “We’re not very tall. So we’ve got to do things a little different this year,” Ivy said in a phone interview. Some of those things include full-court presses, traps and man-to-man defense. “The expectations are high,” Ivy said.
