High School Basketball

Coach: Ryan Pike

Last year: Finished 21-9 overall and 9-3 in the Northwest Conference. ... Went to the Hardwood Classic after going 3-1 at district and 2-0 at tri-district. ... Finished fifth at 1A state tournament, the highest placing in school history.

Players to watch: Mandy Hayes (sr., guard); Breanna Chau (sr., guard); Taylor V’Dovec (sr., post).

Outlook: The Borderites are coming off the most successful season in school history and will attempt do it with a batch of new players that don’t have a lot of varsity experience. “We have to get them used to playing at a new pace. It’s a slow process, but we’ll get there,” Pike said in a phone interview. The expectation is still the same though — make state. “It’s the same year in and year out. ... Next girl up,” Pike said. The Borderites will have to survive without senior post V’Dovec (15.5 points per game) for the first month, as she is out with a broken toe. That means fellow seniors Hayes (12.1) and Chau (6.0) will have to step up to make up for the loss of their leading scorer from last year. “Practice hard and play hard; be good leaders,” Pike said of what he expects.
