GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEW: Bellingham Red Raiders

Coach: Ed Wissing

Last year: Qualified for the state tournament, but lost to W.F. West in the regional round. ... Went 2-1 at the bi-district tournament with wins over Cedarcrest and Anacortes. ... Went 13-11 last season overall, the Red Raiders’ first winning season in at least seven years.

Players to watch: Joelle Zamora (sr., forward), Sarabeth Pemble (sr., forward), Kylie Clark (jr., guard), Emily Benson (jr., guard).

Outlook: The Red Raiders qualified for the state tournament for the first time since the 2008-09 season last season, but this year’s squad is entirely new. The team graduated eight seniors off last year’s squad, and this year only has two seniors. It’s coach Ed Wissing’s second year at the helm for Bellingham, and the mission is clear: “Our focus is on what’s in front of us and getting better right now,” Wissing said in a phone interview. The Red Raiders rely on plenty of young players and some returnees stepping into new roles, but it’s going to be Zamora, the only returning starter, that will have to captain the ship.
