Mountaineers’ post play too much for balanced Meridian

Mount Baker’s girls’ basketball team outlasted a balanced Meridian team in a 71-65 overtime win for the Mounties on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Meridian.

The Mountaineers were led by Emily Yost’s 26 points. Emmy Cline added 22 and Emily Brandland had 19.

Ryley Zapien, Kyrin Backlund, Janessa Murphy and Bryn Magnusson each had 11 points for Meridian.

“We were very balanced all the way around on offense and defense,” Meridian coach Mark Gilmore said in a phone interview. “Baker’s two posts, Brandland and Yost, are real strong inside. We’re not real big and Cline was pretty hot from outside.”

Mount Baker outrebounded Meridian 34-31.

Mount Baker takes on Ferndale at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at home. Meridian hosts Blaine at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5.
