Mariners come up just short in season-opener

Sehome’s girls’ basketball team had a few chances to force overtime and defeat Sedro-Woolley, but came up just short in a 52-51 loss on Monday, Dec. 1, at Sedro-Woolley.

The Mariners were led by Madison MacPhee’s 13 points and five rebounds. Maddy Bryan added nine points and five rebounds, and Jenny McIntyre had seven points and a team-high three assists.

“With four seconds left we had to go full court,” Sehome coach Kim Kirk said in a phone interview. “Maddy Bryan drew the foul and got to the free throw line, but made one of two. We had two different chances before that, but missed a couple layups.”

Sehome forced eight of the Cubs’ 11 turnovers in the second half, Kirk said.

The Mariners will try for a win again at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at Bellingham.
