Strong defensive effort leads Meridian over Coupeville

Meridian’s boys’ basketball team started off its season on a high note with a 68-34 win over Coupeville on Monday, Dec. 1, at Coupeville.

The Trojans were led by Alex Martin’s 17 points and team-high six assists. Kyle Young had 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

“We kind of looked at it as a slow start because we allowed 17 points in the first quarter, but then we settled into our defense and played solid,” Meridian coach Shane Stacy said in a phone interview. “I think it was as a group being more vocal, and understanding the rotations.”

Meridian forced 19 turnovers and held Coupeville to single-digit scoring in each of the final three quarters.

The Trojans play next at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Mount Baker.
