Can Rich Skillman bring identity back to Nooksack Valley boys basketball?

Coach: Rich Skillman (first season)

Last year: Finished 9-14; placed 11th in NWC; advanced to Class 1A Northwest District Tournament

Player to watch: Casey Bauman figures to be a force inside. At 6-foot-6, he showed good athleticism as the football team’s quarterback, and the Pioneers will count on him to create scoring opportunities inside against some of the best bigs the Northwest Conference has to offer.

Newcomer to keep an eye on: Jordan Veening only played in four games for Nooksack Valley last season, but Skillman said he’s expecting big things from the 6-4 junior. “He’s a long kid who is crafty,” Skillman said. “He has the ability and will play a huge role for us.”

Key to the season: Besides Bauman, the only other returner with much experience is senior David Flores, who averaged 8.2 points per game and has matured and developed with a summer of hard work, Skillman said. The Pioneers will need to find other players they can count on as they transition into a new era.

Outlook: It’s only been eight years since Skillman suited up in the purple and white, and he knows how important it is to create the proper identity. “A lot of the kids were raised very similar to how I was, so I understand where they’re coming from,” Skillman said. “Not much has changed. Nooksack basketball is still Nooksack basketball, and we’re going to try to get back to the culture of winning and the expectation of winning.”
