Trojans top Borderites, second game called due to darkness

Meridian and Blaine battled in a softball doubleheader, where Meridian came out on top on Friday, May 15, at Pipeline Fields. The Trojans won the first game, a Northwest Conference contest, 10-8, but the second game, a nonconference game, was called due to darkness tied at 4-4.

Bailey Haugen was 3 for 3 with a double and a pair of RBI to lead the Trojans in the first game. McKenna Smith also went 3 for 4 with a double in that game. In the second game, Sophia Shook was 1 for 2 with two RBI, and Claire Burkett was 2 for 2.

Blaine was led by Riley Miller, who was 2 for 3 with a double in the first game, and Mikayla Deming went 1 for 3 with a double in the nightcap.

“Our pitchers held the walks to a minimum and our defense, even though there were some errors, we got out of situations and just stuck it out and battled,” Meridian coach Megan Monaghan said in a phone interview. “We had 16 hits in the first game, so we were just on fire.”

Meridian plays again at 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 18, at home against Coupeville before starting postseason play. Blaine is done for the season.
