Big 2nd inning boosts Lions over Trojans

Lynden’s softball team broke open a game against Meridian with a 13-run second inning to take a 20-1 Northwest Conference win in four innings over the Trojans on Tuesday, April 21, at Lynden.

Tanna Benson led the Lions, going 4 for 4 with a home run, a pair of doubles and seven runs batted in. Catyler Alex was also 2 for 2 with three runs scored.

“Meridian looked good swinging the bat, so we had to answer that by putting some pressure back on them,” Lynden coach Steve Petersen said in a phone interview. “We swung the bat well that inning — we took advantage of some walks and miscues, and we got some key hits with runners in scoring position.”

Madeline Gray went 1 for 2 with a run scored, and Bailey Haugen was 1 for 1 with an RBI to lead the Trojans.

Lynden takes on Sehome next at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at Frank Geri Fields. Meridian hosts Lynden Christian at 4:30 p.m. the same day.
