Clutch 6th inning gives Mount Baker 8-5 victory

Mount Baker’s softball team fell behind early, but was able to come back and get the 8-5 win against Burlington-Edison on Tuesday, April 21, at Mount Baker High School.

Aleks Toivola earned her eighth win of the season in the circle and led the Mountaineers at the plate. She went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI and Emily Yost went 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI.

Burlington-Edison got three runs in the first inning. But Mount Baker scored five runs over the next three innings. The Tigers tied the game up in the top of the sixth inning at 5-5. Sara Verry hit a one-out single, followed by a two-out single by Jordan Miles to give the Mountaineers a one run lead. Toivola and Yost followed with a double and a triple to give Mount Baker the 8-5 win.

“We dug ourselves in a hole again. Not necessarily how we want to start,” Mount Baker coach Ron Lepper said in a phone interview. “We got back into it by capitalizing on some hits and walks.”

Mount Baker will play Blaine next at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at home.
