Sehome survives Nooksack Valley 7th inning comeback in 11-9 win

Sehome’s softball team had a productive six-run fourth inning and four-run seventh inning to hold off Nooksack Valley in its 11-9 win on Monday, April 22, at Nooksack Valley Middle School.

Both teams hit the ball 11 times and committed three errors on defense, making it a competitive game throughout.

“For both teams, it was one of those nights where the ball was carrying,” Nooksack Valley coach Tom Harmon said in a phone interview.

Mallory Kruzich earned the win for the Mariners and Alexis Pike received the loss for the Pioneers.

“Both kids were working hard,” Harmon said. “But when you have 22 total hits, the teams obviously are swinging the bats.”

After the first three innings, Nooksack Valley had a 4-1 lead. But Sehome rallied at the plate in the fourth inning to knock in six runs to take a 7-4 lead at the end of the inning.

The Pioneers were able to get another run in the bottom of the fifth to cut Sehome’s lead to two runs.

The Mariners were able to get four more insurance runs in the top of the seventh, making it an 11-5 game with Nooksack Valley to bat one last time.

Nooksack Valley responded with four runs of its own and had the tying run at the plate, but came up short in the end.

“No lead was really safe I think,” Harmon said. “They were up six going into the bottom of the seventh and we were right there. It was a fun game.”

Pike led the Pioneers at the plate, going 4 for 4 with three doubles and five RBI. Gabby Gorosave and Kruzich led the Mariners, going 2 for 4 with a double each.

Sehome will take on Lynden next at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at home. Nooksack Valley will play Burlington-Edison next at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at home.
