Mount Baker gives up 6 runs in second inning of 7-6 loss

A rough second inning proved to be the difference in the game as Mount Baker’s baseball team lost to La Conner 7-6 on Saturday, April 18, at La Conner High School.

Kolton Zender went 3 for 4 with a run, three RBI and two stolen bases to lead the Mountaineers at the plate. Grant Balvanz went 2 for 4 with two runs and two stolen bases, Carson Schmidt went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a stolen base and Colton Ranson went 1 for 2 with two runs and two stolen bases.

Mount Baker gave up six runs in the second inning and were playing catch-up the rest of the game, but came up short in the end.

“We played really well. The top of our order was able to hit the ball and steal bases to get guys in scoring position,” Mount Baker coach Derek Johnson said in a phone interview. “We had a chance to tie it up but we were unable to get it done.”

Mount Baker will play Blaine next at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at home.
