Mountaineers fall short in final inning of 5-4 loss

A late rally came up just short for Mount Baker’s softball team as it was left with two runners on base when the game ended in a 5-4 Northwest Conference loss to Anacortes on Friday, April 17, at Daniels Field in Anacortes.

Emily Yost and Emily Brandland led the charge in the top of the sixth with RBI singles, but the Mountaineers couldn’t finish the comeback in the final inning.

“We got off to a shaky start that first inning after we played so clean earlier this week,” Mount Baker coach Ron Lepper said in a phone interview. “I’m proud of our girls for scratching and fighting back. We just had to remind them what we’re capable of doing. It seemed like all the breaks went their way early and we got a little flat for a couple innings, but we got back into it the last few innings.”

Mount Baker gets another crack at a win at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at home against Burlington-Edison.
