Lynden’s softball team held on to win a pitching duel between the Lions’ Tanna Benson and Mount Baker’s Aleks Toivola 1-0 on Tuesday, April 14, at Lynden in a Northwest Conference game.
Benson struck out five and Toivola had three punch-outs, leaving their defenses to do most of the work. Each team only committed one error.
“Baker played clean defense, we played clean defense and both pitchers threw strikes,” Lynden coach Steve Petersen said in a phone interview. “When we put the ball in play it was solid contact, but they made great plays, and they made solid contact when they put it in play, but we made the plays.”
Benson helped her own cause on offense, smacking a home run while going 2 for 3. Toivola also tried to help get the Baker offense going, as she was 1 for 3 at the plate. Both teams had four hits.
Lynden plays next at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at Bellingham. Mount Baker is off until 6 p.m. Friday, April 17, at Daniels Field against Anacortes.
