Cole Mattice started both games of Nooksack Valley’s baseball team’s doubleheader, splitting the two games against Chelan on Saturday, April 11, at Chelan High School.
Mattice threw four innings for a no-decision in the first game — a 3-2 loss. The Pioneers left 21 runners on base in the game. Brady Wood went 2 for 4 and Trevon Beck went 1 for 1 with an RBI to lead Nooksack Valley.
“It’s just one of those games,” Nooksack Valley coach Scott Gelwicks said in a phone interview. “Our pitchers pitched pretty well. We were much better, just didn’t play up to it.”
Mattice got the win after Nooksack Valley won the second game 10-0. The Pioneers had 12 hits to push more runs across the plate, which Gelwicks said should have happened in the first game.
Ryan Gelwicks went 2 for 4 with two runs and four RBI. Curtis Handy went 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI. Conner Anderson went 1 for 2 with two RBI.
“We’re playing well now. We’re getting enough pitching to be winning,” Gelwicks said. “We’re coming out of our funk and are looking forward to the last two or three weeks of the season.”
Nooksack Valley will take on Sehome next at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at home.
