Blaine’s baseball team scored early against Lynden and earned a 7-4 Northwest Conference opening win against the Lions on Thursday, March 26, at Lynden.
“It’s huge for the kids,” Borderites coach Larry Hoffman said in a phone interview. “In the last couple of years we’ve only had one league win, and they’ve been working really hard. We finally got some bounces to go our way, and the pay off is nice to go 1-0 in conference play.”
Jonathan Starcer picked up the win for Blaine in four innings of work, and Cody Gobbato earned his second save of the year. Jaed Vogee went 2 for 3 with two runs and a double, Armondo Moser-Hernandez was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Gobbato was 1 for 2 with two runs and an RBI.
The Borderites scored five runs in the first, thanks to four walks and some timely hitting. Blaine led 6-3 after three and Gobbato pitched the final three innings only throwing around 30 pitches, Hoffman said.
Dalton Ohligschlager led the Lions with a 2 for 3 day with an RBI and a double.
Blaine (2-3, 1-0 NWC) travels to play a non-conference match against Highline next at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 27, while Lynden (1-4, 0-1 NWC) plays Lynden Christian next at 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 30, on the road.
