Pioneers chip away at Mountaineers in big win

Nooksack Valley’s baseball team held Mount Baker to just one hit and chipped away with at least a run scored in every inning in a 17-1 six-inning non-conference win on Tuesday, March 24, at Mount Baker.

Parker Schram earned the win for the Pioneers. Ryan Gelwicks led the way on offense for Nooksack with a 3-for-5 day, including four runs and an RBI. Noah Rawls was also three for five with three doubles, three RBI and two runs.

“Chad (Cohn, Mount Baker’s starting pitcher) did a good job of throwing strikes, but Nooksack swung the sticks well and had a lot of extra-base hits,” Mount Baker coach Derek Johnson said in a phone interview. “We haven’t got in an offensive rhythm yet this year. Today we had an opportunity to score with the bases loaded and nobody out, but couldn’t get a run across, so I think it’s just coming up with those hits with runners in scoring position.”

Mount Baker’s lone hit came by Hayden Linderman, who was 1 for 2, and Jesse Wardle scored the run for the Mountaineers.

Mount Baker hosts Sedro-Woolley 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at home. Nooksack Valley has another road game at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at Bellingham.
