Mattice’s RBI lifts Pioneers to 2-0 win

Nooksack Valley’s baseball team used its solid defense to take a 2-0 victory against Bellingham on Tuesday, March 19, at Nooksack Valley High School.

The Pioneers’ Parker Schram earned the win after pitching four innings and punching out four batters. The Red Raiders’ Aiden Quinn received the loss.

“Parker did a great job and tied them in a knot. We played good defense behind him,” Nooksack Valley coach Scott Gelwicks said in a phone interview.

Curtis Handy went 1 for 2, Cole Mattice went 1 for 3 with a key RBI in the third and Brady Wood went 1 for 2 with a double for Nooksack Valley. Bellingham’s Austin Shenton batted 1 for 3, Nate Pearsall was 1 for 3 and Charlie Carmichael went 1 for 3.

“If we can continue to throw the ball well and play solid we’ll be competitive every day. Our bats need to come to life and everything will come into place,” Gelwicks said.

Nooksack Valley takes on Blaine next at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at Pipeline Fields and Bellingham will play Burlington-Edison next at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 19, on the road.
