Squalicum’s baseball team used three strong innings from David Stealy and then the bats started clicking for a 17-0 season-opening non-league win over Mount Baker on Friday, March 13, at Mount Baker High School.
Stealy, who was on a pitch count, struck out four in three innings and was very efficient, Baker coach Derek Johnson said in a phone interview.
“We’re a little inexperienced,” Johnson said of his team. “We had some guys pitching today that weren’t necessarily experienced pitching at a varsity level. The guys from Squalicum were good at working the count and when they got on base, they were able to find some gaps in the outfield.”
Ernie Yake went 1 for 3 with an RBI, Tim Lann hit 1 for 2 with 3 RBI and Devin Zook went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI. Ruvim Tikhonov got the Mountaineers’ only hit.
