Coach: Gary Hatch
Last year: Finished fourth in the Northwest Conference with an 8-4 record. ... Ended season after going 0-2 during the Class 2A Bi-District Tournament, finishing 13-9 overall.
Players to watch: Jake Albert (sr., P/SS); Tyler Hruby (sr., OF/3B); Aaron Nichols (sr., 3B/C); Leif Anderson (sr., P/OF); Kealohi Grondin (jr., 1B/P); Owen Wright (C/1B)
Outlook: The 25 players that came out for baseball is the smallest group coach Gary Hatch has had during his long tenure, but the ball coach sees plenty of promise in this year’s club, highlighted by a strong group of seniors including Jake Albert, Tyler Hruby, Aaron Nichols and Leif Anderson. “We got some really hard-core guys that love the game,” Hatch said in a phone interview. “We are about 10-to-12 kids strong and then we got some young kids that haven’t played much.” Hruby, Owen Wright and Kealohi Grondin should provide some pop to the Mariners’ lineup, and Nichols, Albert, junior middle infielder Cameron Tipton and senior outfielder Gage Bull also give Sehome pieces to work with at the plate. Sehome’s pitching staff will be anchored by Albert, who logged a 1.09 ERA last spring, and Felix Zavisubin, Anderson, and Grondin should contribute innings and Nichols is being looked at in a closer role. Grondin is one Sehome player Hatch has seen tremendous growth in. “That guy from last year to this year is a 180-degree turn,” Hatch said. “He’s swinging the bat, pitching well. I think he has a big upside.”
