Coach: Steve Slesk
Last year: Tied for 10th in the Northwest Conference with a 4-8 record. ... Ended season after going 1-2 during the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament, finishing 12-14 overall.
Players to watch: Tanner Tutterrow (sr., SS/P); Derek Campfield (jr., P/1B); Brady Moore ( jr., 2B/P); Dalton Biehle (sr., P/OF)
Outlook: After graduating eight seniors from the Trojans’ Class 1A Tri-District team, coach Steve Slesk knows Meridian will undergo its share of learning moments during the early part of the spring. The Trojans are young, but senior shortstop and pitcher Tanner Tutterrow gives Meridian a strong leader to follow. “I like what we have,” Slesk said in a phone interview. “We have a lot of eager kids. Things are going a little slower than usual to make sure we get that solid foundation.” While Meridian’s offense may take some time, the Trojans return some strong pitching, and like always, Meridian should be a strong defensive club with the extra attention to detail the club puts on fielding each season. Big Derek Campfield returns to the bump, and Tutterrow, Brady Moore and Nooksack Valley transfer Dalton Biehle could all log innings on the mound. “We have a little less experience, but I like our talent,” Slesk said. “Some of it is unproven at this point. ... I think we will play good defense, we’ll shore up a spot or two, we’ll swing it and I’m excited to see what happens.”
