Coach: Desi Luna
Last year: Finished ninth in the Northwest Conference with a 5-7 record. ... Ended season after going 1-2 during the Class 1A District Tournament, finishing 8-15 overall.
Players to watch: Alex VanderVelden (sr., OF); Josh Heutink (sr., OF); Dylan Meenk (sr., C); Taiji VanDalen (jr., INF); Marc Meenderinck (jr., INF)
Outlook: This spring could be considered a reloading year for the Lyncs, who only have five upperclassmen on their 13-man roster, but Lynden Christian coach Desi Luna is excited to see how his seniors and junior blend with a hardworking group of younger players. Luna will rely on seniors Alex VanderVelden, Josh Heutink and Dylan Meenk to provide much-needed leadership, and the trio should help dictate the team’s success. VanderVelden, Heutink and sophomore Tyson Cline give the Lyncs their entire starting outfield from a season ago, but Luna will need to break that group up to accommodate the need for pitching. “Alex and Josh will need to pitch for us this year, and we’re looking for another guy to take over when one is on the mound,” Luna said. The LC coach will use the early non-league games to hash out his lineup, but he’s expecting to play junior Marc Meenderinck at shortstop and Taiji VanDalen at second base. Every year Luna places a premium on baseball fundamentals, but this year he said that will be highlighted even more, given the team’s youth. “We’ll be teaching fundamentals all day every day, because defensively that is where you can let ball games go,” Luna said.
