Outlook: New coach Larry Hoffman takes over at Blaine after being an assistant for two years, and he’s hoping this spring the Borderites are able to take the next step since they’ve been working with largely the same group of coaches the past three years now. “We’ve been working hard to get them to buy into the system,” Hoffman said in a phone interview. “It’s good to have kids in their third year of a program.” Headlining Blaine will be senior pitcher and infielder Cody Gobbato and senior pitcher and outfielder Rudy Nolasco. Combined they have seven years of program experience, and Hoffman will rely on their leadership. Jonathan Starcer and Gobbato are expected to shoulder the bulk of the Borderites’ pitching, but Josh Fakkema, and sophomores Anthony Ball and Jalen Kortlever are also expected to chip in. Manufacturing runs, though, will be Blaine’s focus. Ten times the Borderites scored two or less runs last spring. “We’re working diligently on our offense,” Hoffman said. “Work at the plate, that’s been the hardest part over the last two years.” Junior infielder Armondo Moser-Hernandez is a player Hoffman believes could help Blaine score a bit more this year.
