PREP SOFTBALL PREVIEW: Mount Baker Mountaineers

MOUNT BAKER

Mountaineers

Coach: Ron Lepper

Last year: Finished the year 20-8 overall and 8-4 in Northwest Conference play. ... They then went on to win six of their first seven playoff games on their way to a Class 1A state title appearance, where they fell 6-1 to Elma.

Players to watch: Aleks Toivola (Sr., P), Emily Yost (Sr., IF), Lacey Postlewait (Sr., OF)

Outlook: After a state title appearance, the Mountaineers are excited for another run at it. They have plenty of talent once again this year to do so. The Mountaineers are headed by pitcher Aleks Toivola, who is accompanied in the senior class by Emily Yost and Lacey Postlewait. “We’ve got a pretty good group back that we played last year,” coach Ron Lepper said in a phone interview. “We’re just trying to find a catcher, outfielder, and a first baseman.” Juniors Emily Brandland, Sara Verry and Jordan Miles will all make big contributions. But the goal is simple for Baker: get to the playoffs. “We don’t care how we get there,” Lepper said. “Just give us a chance and anything can happen.” There’s also a cast of players competing for the final starting spots including Akemi Schwinden, Madie Gates and McKenzie Yost.
