Last year: Went 19-2 overall and an undefeated 12-0 in the Northwest Conference (first). ... Captured NWC title with five-set wins over Burlington-Edison and Ferndale and a four-set win over Lynden Christian. ... Won all nine sets in three matches at the Class 2A District Tournament and went 2-0 on the first day of the state tournament. ... Fell to North Kitsap 3-1 in the semifinals and then settled for fourth after losing to Selah in the third-place game.
Players to watch: Emily Greer (OH, Sr.), Katrina Dank (MB, Sr.), Kayla Thurman (OH, Sr.), Beth Clawson (MB, Sr.), Kate Cunningham (OH, Sr.)
Outlook: The Mariners graduated a lot of talent from last year’s fourth-place state finish, but there’s still a ton left, as the Mariners will look to continue the successful program they’ve built. “Luckily, even though we lost talented players, the players coming in learned from those that moved on and are doing big things at the university level,” coach Kristy White said in a phone interview. “A lot of them are coming off last year, they were there too. They know what it takes to win.” Heading that group is Emily Greer as outside hitter. She was a force last season for the Mariners, and the short-for-her-position player will once again be one to watch. She’ll join middles Katrina Dank, who showed vast improvement last season, and Beth Clawson along with hitters Kayla Thurman and Kate Cunningham to make up the senior class. “They’ve worked through the summer and gave up hours and days of what could have been spent at the lake. They’re dedicated and are excited to be back,” White said.
