Ezra Arneson and Alex Crabtree finished the first round of the Class 2A State Tournament with a score of 72 for Lynden. Nick Nolan finished with a 72 to lead Bellingham on Wednesday, May 27, at Liberty Lake Golf Course.
Arneson, Crabtree and Nolan all are 6 strokes behind the leader heading into the second round.
Rees Kruhlak finished the first round with a score of 75 and sits in a three-way tie for 17th place.
Tavo O’Connell finished the first round tied with three other golfers at a score of 77 to advance, Tanner Griffiths shot a 99 and missed the cut set at 80.
“I saw some really clutch putts for par with some scrambling ability today,” Squalicum coach Jeff Tetrick said in a phone interview. “A little wild with the driver, he got back control and finished strong.”
Heading into the second round, O’Connell will be looking to improve on his putting to make up ground on the leaders.
“I hit that ball well today but didn’t roll in as many putts as I wish,” he said. “Tomorrow I’ll just be a little more aggressive with my putts.”
Overall, O’Connell is content with just advancing to the second day of state.
“It’s a relief because now I can go tomorrow and shoot as low as possible. I’ll enjoy the fact I made it and I have a good group of guys to compete with,” O’Connell said.
The Red Raiders’ Ben Henrikson just made the cut with an individual score of 80 as all Bellingham golfers made the cut.
The Class 2A State Championships will continue Thursday, May 28, at Liberty Lake Golf Course.
Henrikson will be the first to tee-off for the Whatcom County golfers at 7:30 a.m.
