Rusnak has big day for LC

Hannah Rusnak won three events for Lynden Christian’s girls’ track and field team on the final day of the Class 1A Bi-District Championships on Saturday, May 23, at King’s High School.

The top-3 finishers from each event will advance to the 1A State Championships.

Rusnak placed first in the 100 with a winning time of 12.56 seconds and ran a winning time of 14.68 in the 100 hurdles. The Lyncs’ 4x100 relay team of Brianna Bruneau, Madison Weg, Brandy Bruneau and Rusnak took first place with a time of 49.38. Then the team’s 4x400 relay team of Brandy, Brianna, Weg and Sara Dougan finished in first place with a time of 4:05.83. The 4x200 team of Brianna, Madison Hallberg, Madison Wiese and Brandy finished third (1:47.32).

“We had a great day today,” Lynden Christian coach Kent de Hoog said in a phone interview. “We had a number of events that we knew were right on the edge of making it to state. Most of those qualified.”

Meridian’s girls team took second place in the bi-districts with a score of 84. The Trojans’ 4x200 relay team of Payton Lunde, Katelyne Zucati, Emily Brackinreed and Janessa Murphy placed first with a time of 1:47.00. The 4x400 team of Lunde, Zucati, Mackenzie Cox and Murphy also placed second (4:07.04). Murphy also placed third in the 400 (59.02).

“It was the Janessa Murphy show for us,” Meridian coach Patrick Ames said in a phone interview. “It will be the second straight year she will have four events to compete in.”

Mount Baker’s Natalie Smith placed first in the 800 on a winning time of 2:18.09 and Nooksack Valley’s Haley VanderHeiden placed first in the discus with a throw of 107 feet. VanderHeiden also qualified for state with a second place finish in the shot put (34-05.25).

On the boys’ side, Meridian also took second place as a team with a score of 113. Nick Miller finished in first place in the 400 (49.72) and Marcus McGuinn won the 300 hurdles (41.21). McGuinn also finished second in the 110 hurdles (15.79) and Isaiah Thompson took third (16.27). Collin Magnusson placed second in the 3,200 (9:36.88).

Jesse Phan placed first in the 800 for the Mountaineers (1:55.94) and the Pioneers’ Colton Kautz placed first in the shot put (46-07). Connor Beard also placed third in the long jump for Nooksack Valley (42-01.5).

Lynden Christian’s 4x100 relay team of David Bladies, David Martin, Sam Vander Griend and Nathan Rusnak placed third (44.39). Terrel Brown also qualified for state with a third place finish in the shot put (43-10.25.

The Class 1A State Championships will be held on Thursday, May 28 through Saturday May 30, at Eastern Washington University.
