Bellingham finishes second at districts

Nick Nolan won the individual district title as Bellingham’s boys’ golf team qualified three golfers to state at the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament on Tuesday, May 19, at Snohomish Golf Course.

The Red Raiders took second place as a team in districts, Archbishop Murphy finished as district champions.

Nolan shot a 70 on the first day and a 73 the second day to finish with the lowest score of 143. Rees Kruhlak shot an 82 in the second day to finish 13th overall and Ben Henrikson shot an 85 to finish 12th overall. Jonathan Larson finished with a 167 and missed the cut by two strokes, while Zack Nolan finished with a 168.

“Overall it was a solid performance,” Bellingham coach David Bobillot said in a phone interview. “A few putts more and we could have five guys going (to state). Rees (Kruhlak) and Ben (Henrikson) played well down the stretch.”

Squalicum finished fourth as a team and was led by Tanner Griffiths 75 on the second day, while Tavo O’Connell shot a 76. Both golfers will be advancing to state next weekend.

“It was a tough field of guys,” O’Connell said in a phone interview. “I feel honored to move on to state. I’m excited to have another guy go onto state with me and I’m proud of Tanner.”

The Storm’s Brandon Weeda lost in a playoff at the end of the tournament for the second alternate position.

“They all played great today,” Squalicum coach Jeff Tetrick said in a phone interview. “It was a tough field.”

Lynden finished district play sixth overall as a team. Ezra Arneson shot a 77 the second day to finish with a sixth-best score of 154 and Alex Crabtree shot a 77 and finished 10th overall in districts.

“They played pretty well, a few miscues here and there,” Lynden coach Russ Dorr said. “We’ll see what happens this year (at state). You never know.”

Sehome had one golfer advance to the second day of districts and advance to the state tournament. Kyle Reilly shot an 80 on the second day and won a playoff at the end of the tournament against Weeda for the second alternate spot at state.

“It’s big (for him). In his first year playing golf, he played solid today,” Sehome coach Sam Reier said in a phone interview. “He played really steady and impressive.”

The Class 2A State Tournament will begin on Wednesday, May 27, at Liberty Lake Golf Course in Liberty Lake.
