Bellingham’s boys’ golf team’s Nick Nolan finished the first day of the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament with a score of 70 and is tied for the lead on Monday, May 18, at Snohomish Golf Course.
The cut for the first day of the tournament was 89 and all six golfers made it into the second round.
Ben Henrikson shot a 77, Rees Kruhlak shot an 81, Garrett Walker an 82, Zack Nolan an 85 and Jonathan Larson an 88 on the day.
“It’s good that they all made it there,” Bellingham coach David Bobillot said in a phone interview. “We’ve got a couple of guys on the bubble for state. We’re excited. Hopefully we can get five or six (to state).”
Lynden’s Ezra Arneson shot a 77 to lead the Lions at Snohomish and Alex Crabtree shot an 80.
“Ezra had a little tough go down the stretch,” Lynden coach Russ Dorr said in a phone interview. “Alex played 17 very positive holes, but had a set-back on the last hole. They’re going to be OK for tomorrow.”
For Squalicum, Tavo O’Connell led the team with an 81. Followed by Brandon Weeda’s score of 82, Logan Sitkin’s 87, Tanner Griffiths 88, Griffin Korby a 98 and Taylor Lenderman a 91 to finish out for the Storm.
“I was proud of the team and how they focused in on their goals for the week. And to play on a new course and compete well,” Squalicum coach Jeff Tetrick said in a phone interview.
Even with O’Connell and Weeda’s quality performance on day one, Tetrick expects more for tomorrow.
“I think they still have yet to show their potential,” he said. “If they put a solid round together they should be in the hunt for the state tournament.”
For Sehome, Kyle Reilly shot an 86 to lead the team and Gabe Savage had a 90 for the first day.
“Kyle played pretty good and steady,” Sehome coach Sam Reier said in a phone interview. “He just needs to make more putts and he should have a good chance.”
The second day of the Northwest District Tournament will begin at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, at Snohomish Golf Course.
