Ferndale doubles team Carly Bannerman and Shelby Slaughter won two matches, including a come-from-behind final, to win a Class 3A Wesco North Division Sub-District Tournament title Thursday, May 14, at Stanwood High School.
Bannerman and Slaughter beat Stanwood’s Abby Spencer and Kiki Dillon 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals before rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 championship win over Stanwood duo Kylie Stevens and Aleshia Piazzi.
“I honestly think they beat them out of sheer determination,” Ferndale coach Ed Sweitzer said in a phone interview. “They didn’t play great, but they played good enough to win. Their determination pulled them through.”
Singles player Juliana Gholam was defeated 6-4, 6-0 and was eliminated, as was Ferndale doubles team of Sofia Chahine and Hailey Schulz, which lost 6-0, 6-1.
