Sehome’s Zucchi, Holland move on to district tournament

Sehome’s Mia Zucchi and Hailey Holland recovered from a consolation-round loss to beat Blaine’s Mandy Hayes and Emily Roe 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in the fifth-place match of the Class 2A Sub-District Tournament doubles draw on Wednesday, May 13, earning a trip to next week’s district tournament.

The Mariners’ Taylor Harris also Simone Hall also won the doubles third-place match, topping Bellingham’s Ellie Iwersen and Mariah Miller 6-1, 6-2. Both pairs had already secured their trip to the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament.

They’ll join sub-district champions Natalie Knops and Andrea Zucchi from Sehome and runners-up Kim Dorr and Rachel Dorr from Squalicum, as the top five finishers in each draw advance.

In the single’s draw, Sehome’s Ali Morrow fell to Sedro-Woolley’s Kassidee Beuse 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the third-place match, while Anacortes’ Nicole McInerney beat teammate Taylor Phillips 6-4, 7-5 in the fifth-place match.

Beuse, Morrow and McInerney will join Sehome’s Lauren Smith and Andrea Clawson in the district tournament.

The first round of the district tournament is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Monday, May 18, at Sehome High School. If rain becomes a factor, the tournament will be moved indoors to Skagit Valley College and start at 9 a.m.
