Ferndale’s girls’ tennis team won three out of four matches in the Class 3A Wesco North Tournament on Tuesday, May 12, at Stanwood High School.
Due to rain, the tournament was relocated to Skagit Valley College, where it was finished.
The Golden Eagles’ No. 1 seed doubles team of Carly Bannerman and Shelby Slaughter defeated their opponent 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the third round. If the duo wins their match tomorrow, they will advance to the tournament championship and clinch a berth into the Class 3A District Tournament.
“They were anxious to play,” Ferndale coach Ed Sweitzer said in a phone interview. “They played with a lot of energy and struck the ball well. Shelby’s serving was great today.”

“Hailey Schulz played incredible today and picked up her game. They should do well tomorrow,” Sweitzer said.
In the singles, Juliana Gholam defeated her first opponent 6-4, 6-2 and then lost her second match 4-6, 2-6. She will play her next match tomorrow in a loser-out game.
Trina Byers lost a close match in three sets by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 5-7 to be eliminated in the tournament.
“As far as Ferndale goes today, we had four entries and three are still playing,” Sweitzer said. “To have three playing tomorrow is a successful day.”
Ferndale will continue play in the Wesco North Tournament at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at either Stanwood or Skagit Valley College, depending on weather.
