Intense match gets rained out in 6-0 Bellingham win

Bellingham’s girls’ tennis team got enough matches in before the rain came in, as the Red Raiders topped Ferndale 6-0 in a Northwest Conference meeting on Friday, April 24, at Bellingham High School.

New pairing Olivia Bjorklund and Savannah Atwell topped Sophia Chahine and Haley Schulz 6-3, 6-1 in a positive showing, Bellingham coach Steve Chronister said in a phone interview.

The match of the day, however, couldn’t get completed before the rainout.

Ferndale’s Carly Bannerman and Shelby Slaughter were tied with Bellingham’s Alice Hiebert and Sophia Lawrence 6-4, 5-7, 4-4 before it was called off after 2 hours and 55 minutes of play.

“It was four really good athletes, taking a lot of good shots, a lot of good gets and a lot of good play,” Chronister said.

Bellingham faces Blaine on Monday, April 27, on the road. Ferndale plays Lynden on Monday at home.
