Bellingham’s girls’ tennis team showed why it consistently ranks among the top teams in the Northwest Conference on Wednesday, April 22, in its 7-0 Northwest Conference win over Lynden at Bellingham High School.
The Red Raiders’ top names got two-set wins across the board and the back half of the singles lineup showed some resilience against a Lynden team that gave them a run for their money.
“All of the singles were good matchups. They were closely contested — long rallies, tough points,” Bellingham coach Steve Chronister said in a phone interview.
Facing the stiffest challenges were No. 3 singles player Olivia Bjorklund and No. 4 singles player Katie Kales, who both had to come from behind in a set to get the two-set win and the Red Raiders are “pretty happy with that,” Chronister said.
In what was a good sign for the Red Raiders’ depth, Anna Crowley and Marle Knowles at No. 3 doubles played one of their best matches of the year in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Emily Brown and Tara Gartner, Chronister added.
The other two doubles teams cruised to two-set wins as well, as Bellingham had one of their strongest doubles lineups out there with two of their best players — Ellie Iwersen and Mariah Miller — pairing up Wednesday.
“Sometimes we have Ellie and Mariah in doubles and sometimes we don’t so we were in a strong position doubles-wise,” Chronister said.
The Red Raiders face off against Ferndale on Friday, April 24, at home, while Lynden face another stiff opponent in Sehome on Friday.
