Bellingham swept singles play to top Ferndale’s girls’ tennis team 5-2 on Friday, April 17, at Ferndale.
Ellie Iwersen, Oriana LoCicero, Ruby Parker and Olivia Bjorklund were singles winners for the Red Raiders.
In doubles play, Ferndale’s Carly Bannerman and Shelby Slaughter earned a 6-2, 6-1 win, and the new team of Sophia Chahine and Hailey Schulz won its third match this week.
“Singles are struggling a bit, and Bellingham is one of the top teams every year,” Ferndale coach Ed Sweitzer said in a phone interview. “Steve Chronister is a very good coach and they’re always tough to play. Our singles just need to learn how to win. They can sit and hit with someone, volley and rally, but they need to learn how to win and read their opponent so when they get a chance to take a point they can do it.”
Sweitzer complemented Chahine and Schulz for their impressive play as a new pairing. He plans to stick with that duo for the foreseeable future, he said.
Ferndale plays next at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Sedro-Woolley. Bellingham hosts Anacortes at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 20, at home.
