Bellingham’s Nolan medals in Whatcom County Championships

Bellingham’s boys’ golf team’s Nick Nolan shot a 71 and finished as the medalist Thursday, March 26, in the Whatcom County Championships at Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

Ezra Arneson finished second with a score of 75 for to lead Ferndale.

“Ezra had a one-shot lead after the first hole,” Bellingham coach David Bobillot said in a phone interview. “Nick and Ezra battled back and forth. At the turn Nick had a three-shot lead.”

Leading the pack in a 10-team tournament, Nolan said his play was pretty consistent.

“Today was a lot of pars,” he said. “I missed a few, made a few and hit the ball pretty well. I hit off the tee better than I have lately and that was the key to my success lately.”

Arneson credited his second place finish toward his swings on his second strokes.

“I hit the ball decent today. My second shots were the best for me today,” Arneson said.

It was a battle between two good friends, Bobillot noted, as Nolan and Arneson have been longtime friends.

To place first and second at one of the bigger non-conference tournaments of the season, the two have a feeling they will be battling it out later in the season.

“This is one of our bigger tournaments of the year. To get out here and play against the whole conference, it was good to be on top,” Nolan said. “I think when it comes down to districts and conference championships, it’s going to be tight.”

Arneson has a feeling the two will be competing for it all in the conference championships.

“I think the battle for the title is going to be between Nick and I,” he said. “It’s a friendly rivalry.”

Bellingham will travel to Loomis Trail Golf and Country Club at 2 p.m. Monday, March 30 and Ferndale will play at Sedro-Woolley next at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 14.
