Ferndale nearly sweeps boys’ individual running events, Nooksack Valley sweeps girls’ throwing at meet against Sehome, Anacortes

Ferndale’s Daniel Jones and Roberto Aguilera each won three events, and Nooksack Valley’s throwers swept the girls’ throwing events at a track and field meet between Sehome, Nooksack Valley, Blaine, Ferndale and Anacortes on Wednesday, March 25, at Civic Stadium.

Jones won all the boys’ sprints, taking the 100 with a time of 11.53 seconds, the 200 in 23.16 and the 400 in 52.5. Aguilera won the distance events with a 2:02.59 in the 800, a 4:37.3 in the 1,600 and a 9:55.4 in the 3,200. The 3,200 time edged out Anacortes’ Dylan Holland by 0.4 seconds.

Nooksack Valley’s Haley VanderHeiden won the shot put with a throw of 32 feet, 5 inches, and the discus with an 89-04. Nicole Whittern completed the Pioneers’ sweep of the throwing events with an 89-10 in javelin.

Sehome’s Emily Pittis took first in the 800 and 3,200. She ran a 2:30.2 in the 800 and a 12:17.8 in the 3,200. Her teammate on the boys’ side, Anton Arena, won the two hurdle events with a 17.53 in the 110 hurdles and a 47.04 in the 300 hurdles.

Sehome coach Kevin Ryan also praised Tyler Haggen for his throw of 152-09 to win the discus.

“Times were brutal today, there was a brutal headwind,” Ryan added in a phone interview.

Sehome swept its duals on the boys’ and girls’ sides, and Ferndale beat Anacortes and Nooksack Valley on the boys’ side and beat Anacortes in the girls’ meet. Nooksack Valley’s boys and girls both beat Anacortes, too. No score was provided for the dual between Ferndale’s and Nooksack Valley’s girls.

Ferndale will participate in the Bedlington Twilight at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 26, at Lynden. Sehome’s next meet is the Don Holder Relays at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 28, at Eisenhower in Yakima. Nooksack Valley hosts Squalicum and Lynden Christian at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at home.
