Coach: Don Helling
Last year: Scored one golfer in the Class 2A Bi-District Tournament. She fell just short of qualifying for state.
Players to watch: Hannah Peterson (sr.), Taylor Firnstone (jr.), Ina LeGrandeur (jr.)
Outlook: The Mariners look like they are improved over last season, at least in the early going. Senior and team captain Hannah Peterson missed state last year, but should make another strong run at qualifying this season. “She’s looking great,” coach Don Helling said in a phone interview. To go with Peterson, the Mariners have some junior talent in Taylor Firnstone and Ina LeGrendeur, who transferred from a school in Olympia. “(Firnstone) was a solid player for us last year, and she’s back stronger than she’s been in the past,” Helling said. The goal for the Mariners is to get a couple golfers to state. “We’re just focusing on fundamentals,” Helling said. “We’re basically focusing on all the things we normally do in the early season — basic fundamentals and getting ready for first matches.” The Mariners may go their ups and downs this season, as it doesn’t appear they have a ton of depth, but it should be encouraging that the team has some girls with the potential to make the state tournament.
