Coach: Mike Lembo
Last year: Advanced four golfers to the tri-district tournament, and one made it as an alternate to the Class 1A State Tournament.
Players to watch: Natalie Verry (so.), Bria Henthorn (so.), Asia Roman (jr.), Gemma Wilson (so.)
Outlook: The Mountaineers are very young, but there’s talent among the youthful players. Natalie Verry was the closest to getting to the Class 1A State Tournament during her freshman season. Alongside her are Bria Henthorn, Asia Roman and Gemma Wilson, all who played some varsity golf last season. “They’re all battling for the top spot,” coach Mike Lembo said in a phone interview. It’s plenty encouraging for Lembo to see several girls that have the potential to reach the state tournament. “At 1A, the goal for us is to win districts,” Lembo said. “Last year we were pretty close, but that’s again a goal this year. ... We also always try to finish in the top three in the conference.” There’s no doubt enough depth for the Mountaineers to make a run at some of those goals, but first they must learn to compete. “They just need to be a little more competitive,” Lembo said. “That’s what they need to do to understand the pressure of competition.”
