Coach: Sam Reier
Last year: Barely missed out on two golfers qualifying for the Class 2A State Tournament.
Players to watch: Thomas Mankle (jr.), Brady McDonell (so.)
Outlook: One of former coach Stu Gorski’s past players is taking over the Mariners this year. Sam Reier will be at the helm for Sehome, as Gorski takes a step back while still helping with the junior varsity team. Reier, who also has some experience playing at the college level, will bring a youthful face to the Mariners, and he believes that will help the squad. “I just try to treat them as if I’m in their shoes,” Reier said in a phone interview. “Thinking about what I could have done in high school golf and apply it to them.” Overall, Sehome is a young team this year — the Mariners have only one senior — but Reier is trying to get the team to work toward the future. “We have a lot of good athletes, and the potential to have a lot of talent,” Reier said. Among the top names are junior Thomas Mankle and sophomore Brady McDonell. Mankle was the No. 1 for Sehome all last season and returns as the team leader. McDonell could make a push toward state. The team as a whole, though, must learn to take things one shot a time and handle its composure to succeed, Reier said. If they do that, the Mariners can be competitive.
