Coach: Chris O’Day
Last year: Didn’t place any golfers in the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament.
Players to watch: Michael O’Bryan (so.), Jimmy Hagen (so.)
Outlook: The Pioneers are young — very young — but second-year coach Chris O’Day is excited with where they’re headed. “It’s looking pretty good,” O’Day said in a phone interview. “They’ve shown improvement. It’s nice have guys we can bring to varsity matches, hoping to compete at a higher level.” The Pioneers will start the season with two golfers on the varsity team and five golfers total that return from last season. They also have five new freshmen that will start the year on JV . “The expectations are just to get better with every match,” O’Day said. Michael O’Bryan and Jimmy Hagen are the two golfers that will start the year on the varsity team, and they have some talent. For a team with so much youth, it’s actually made it easy to coach the kids, O’Day said. “They’re all learning at the same time. They can help each other out,” O’Day said. “It’s nice they can learn from the same experience levels.” The positive for Nooksack Valley is that they’re willing to learn. All the boys listen to what O’Day has to say and take steps toward getting better. “The big step is not killing the ball and being patient, having more confidence and playing smart,” O’Day said.
