Coach: Chad Hoidal
Last year: Qualified three golfers for the Class 1A State Tournament, including one who finished 21st. Three missed the cut in the tri-district tournament.
Players to watch: Tanner Bass (sr.), Mason Bass (jr.)
Outlook: Losing three state participants is going to be hard, so Mount Baker likely will have its share of struggles this season. The two guys that do come into this season with experience are senior Tanner Bass and junior Mason Bass, but the next four guys are fairly inexperienced. “I think the big thing is leading by example,” coach Chad Hoidal said of the Basses in a phone interview. “They know what it takes to be successful.” The Mountaineers will take some time to warm up, as many players play other sports. “They showed up this season and it was obvious they didn’t put much time in the offseason,” Hoidal said. “If they’re willing to put in the time and effort, they can peak at the right time.” Hoidal joked that he has the football team’s starting quarterback and three running backs and he has to turn them into golfers. “It’s not like we have a country club out here,” Hoidal said. Still, there’s enough athleticism here to be competitive once they get their swings back.
