Coach: Joel Wark
Last year: Qualified one golfer to the Class 3A State Tournament and barely missed a second. Earned two All-Northwest Conference second-team selections.
Players to watch: Daniel Erickson (sr.), Joel Quanz (sr.), Devon Bennett (sr.), Keenan Souve (jr.), Dane Larsen (so.)
Outlook: The Golden Eagles could be one of the top teams in the conference, but offseason injuries give coach Joel Wark plenty of question marks entering the season. “If we’re healthy, that’s one set of goals,” Wark said in a phone interview. “We’re hoping we can gain depth and survive the first few matches, where injured guys aren’t playing.” The captains of the team are seniors Daniel Erickson (19th at the district tournament last season) and Joel Quanz (37th). Devon Bennett, another senior, has shown improvement and could help the team through the early season while players recover from injury. Junior Keenan Souve and sophomore Dane Larsen are the young stars of the Golden Eagles. Both have district experience and could make huge contributions, especially Larsen once he gets back from injury. Overall, there is enough depth if the whole roster is playing to compete with the best in the conference — Ferndale could even get a few guys to the state tournament — but the key is to get through those early season struggles that will certainly come as players get back in golf shape.
