Nick Nolan shot a 75 to lead Bellingham’s golf team to a victory with a 409 team score Thursday, March 19, in the City Championship at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
Squalicum shot a team score of 466 and Sehome shot a 477.
For the three city schools, the championships gives the players a chance to play together before competing in the Whatcom championships and in Northwest Conference play.
“The emphasis of the tournament is being a one-school approach for the city athletes,” Squalicum coach Jeff Tetrick said in a phone interview. “For the students to be together, compete together and have camaraderie before we get to the Whatcom County Championships and compete in the Northwest Conference.”
In the past, Tetrick has seen the tournament help the players before the season really starts to get going.
“When they’re out there they get comfortable with the surroundings. The four or five past years we have supported each other on the course and it’s helped. It’s a cool tournament,” he said.
Bellingham coach David Bobillot critiqued the play of Nolan.
“Nick actually struggled a bit. He struck the ball well but didn’t get anything in the hole right away,” Bobillot said in a phone interview. “He came through with even pars on the back nine.”
Ben Henrickson shot a 76 for the Red Raiders, finishing the course with the second best score.
“Ben drove the ball really well. He kept in good position off the tee and was really solid on the green,” Bobillot said.
Logan Sitkin led Squalicum with a score of 87, followed by Tavo O’Connell’s 92.
For Sehome, Thomas Mankle shot an 83, Brady McDonnell and Cam Adrian both shot a 94 on the day.
“We’re a pretty young team,” Sehome coach Sam Reier said in a phone interview. “It’s the first time it rained all year on the course. I’m proud of the way they all played and we’re getting better each day.”
