Coach: Ed Sweitzer
Last year: Finished tied for eighth in the Northwest Conference with a 1-7 record and finished 3-11 overall.
Players to watch: Juliana Gholam (jr.); Carly Bannerman (sr.); Shelby Slaughter (sr.); Holly Clark (jr.); Gloriana Swanson (jr.); Trina Bowers (sr.)
Outlook: Under first-year coach Ed Sweitzer last year the Golden Eagles began taking a step forward, and now during Year 2, Ferndale again is moving toward becoming more of a factor in the Northwest Conference. “I think they believe with the training they have that we can beat and will beat a good portion of the teams,” Sweitzer said in a phone interview. “We can certainly compete with a good portion of them.” Headlining the Golden Eagles is the senior doubles team of Carly Bannerman and Shelby Slaughter. The pair made a deep district tournament run last year and should again vie for a state tournament spot. Sweitzer said Ferndale’s 15-girl team may be an all-time record for turnout, and the group is comprised of a nice mix of upper and underclassmen. Taking the four varsity singles spots are seniors and juniors. Ranking is still being worked out, but Juliana Gholam, Holly Clark, Gloriana Swanson and Trina Bowers will all receive varsity time. “I’m excited for the season, and I think the girls are, too,” Sweitzer said. “For Ferndale, I think the program is going in the right direction.”
